Review of the computer game Half-Life 2: Episode One

Back in 2004, Half-Life 2 became, without exaggeration, a real milestone in the gaming industry. The game, for a reason, has collected several dozen awards along with a bunch of the highest ratings from various critics and the profile gaming press around the world.

But let's not spread any more thoughts about this. Therefore, after the huge success of the game, the head of Valve Corporation himself, the great and respected Gabe Logan Newell, made an official statement to all fans of the Half-Life series. He stated that from that moment on, all subsequent game projects of this franchise will be released in an episodic format, or rather, in the form of three small episodes.

On the one hand, this will allow developers to work freely and without a tight time frame on improving the Source game engine and at the same time writing a continuation of the story. On the other hand, players and fans will not have to wait another six years before the new part of the series appears. And to be honest, then such a decision was perceived positively by everyone, no matter how you really look at it win-win solution. From that moment on, the developers took up the painstaking work, and the fans of the series, in turn, began to wait for this news.

And then one day, after two long years, the world finally saw the continuation of the story. Half-Life 2: Episode One is a computer game in the genre of First-person shooter developed and published by the American corporation Valve on June 1, 2006 exclusively on PC. The release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 had to wait until the tenth and eighteenth of October 2007, respectively. The plot events of the first episode unfold immediately after the finale of Half-Life 2, and the protagonist of the game will continue to be the only and unique graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a talented theoretical physicist, holder of a PhD in theoretical physics or just a famous man with a red crowbar in his hand - Gordon Freeman.

As you know, after the explosion of the teleport of the citadel of the Alliance, which claimed the lives of the former head of the complex "Black Mesa" and at the same time the administrator of the planet Earth - Dr. Wallace Brin, the main character was again under the control of a mysterious man dressed in a classic black suit with a briefcase in his hand - though not for long. A moment before sending Mr. Freeman back to stasis, G-man, quite unexpectedly, meets several Vortigaunts on his way, who first save the life of Alex Vance, and then help the theoretical physicist get out of the dark abyss.

It is interesting to observe all the changes, because once for these aliens, Gordon Freeman was just an ordinary angry man with a red crowbar in his hand, and in their opinion he was no different from other people, and now they were ready to risk their own lives for his salvation. After recovering, the main character finds himself under a pile of rubble and here he is found by a faithful mechanical four-legged friend along with Miss Vance. It turns out that the neutralization of the teleport caused much more damage to the harvesters than the rebels expected.

The Alliance forces stationed on Earth remained completely isolated from their allies in other worlds, their communication system was completely neutralized along with the established "Containment Field". This, in turn, greatly contributed to the rebels in their struggle in different parts of the world, and also opened up many opportunities to correct the demographic situation of humanity as a whole.

Despite such a small victory, the main character still remained in mortal danger, as the level of dark energy of the Citadel reactor reached a critical level. The giant symbol of the Alliance's power could explode at any moment, levelling the entire city to the ground. Therefore, Mr. Freeman, along with Alex Vance, needed to temporarily stabilize the reactor, as well as successfully get out of "City 17". This is the plot of the game, and then we turn to the review of the technical and gameplay features of this game project.

From a technical point of view, the game developers have done a good job of improving the Source game engine: the artificial intelligence of opponents has undergone changes, the facial animation of the NPC has been redesigned along with the lighting system using HDR technology. From a gameplay point of view, the game is not at all different from Half-Life 2, because the key mechanics have remained virtually unchanged. Gordon Freeman, dressed in a good old HEV (Hazardous Environment Vest) suit of the fifth model, as before, uses a huge arsenal of weapons.

Starting with the famous "Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator" and ending with pistols, machine guns, grenades and a launcher. To restore the level of health and energy in the future, special first aid kits are used together with batteries. One of the features of this game project is the system of interaction with partners, because unlike the previous game, Mr. Freeman will spend the entire First episode from the beginning to the very end in the company of the charming Alex Vance. And I must say that Miss knows how to stand up for herself and will help Gordon more than once during the plot events, covering him with fire from an automatic pistol or shotgun.

One new kind of zombie appeared among the opponents - Zombine. These are former soldiers of the Alliance army who were "lucky" to meet headcrabs. They are extremely resilient and often like to go on suicide attacks. Pulling the pin out of the grenade, the zombie with a terrible scream and howl will run straight to you, so be careful and careful not to let them get too close to you. For some, the disadvantage of the game may be its relatively short duration. There are only five plot chapters waiting for you, the passage of which generally takes three or four hours.

A vivid analogy in this case is one of the additions to the original Half-Life, namely Half-Life: Blue Shift. In general, Half-Life 2: Episode One came out, albeit a small, but a beautiful continuation of the story of the adventures of Gordon Freeman. We have nothing more to add here.
